I work in a hospital that does not have a huge maternity ward. When a baby is born, a short lullaby (~ 10 seconds) is played overhead on the intercom. I usually hear that lullaby once maybe a few times a week. So why did I hear that lullaby about five times on Monday, and several more today?
The answer makes me uneasy. Christmas is in four days. It’s so much more convenient to get these births out of the way now…convenient for the Ob-Gyn, convenient for the nursing staff who will likely be understaffed during the holidays, convenient for the mother and possibly convenient for her family.
But what about the baby? When did caesarean sections move from the realm of an emergency to routine to fit our appointment books and to prevent the inherent risks associated with vaginal delivery?
